I study finance. I wonder, can derivatives be issued with Counterparty? What are the benefits compared with traditional financial products?

Early on derivatives were available in form of Contracts for Difference (CfD’s) but that was disabled with the idea that a variety of contracts would be possible once Ethereum-style Smart Contracts can be executed on Counterparty.
Then because of delays with Ethereum, everything’s been delayed. So there are no derivative contracts available today.
